Sunlight on a Sphere
Lit fraction = one angle: Moon from Sun.
The ledger opens. The Moon makes no light of its own. What you see is sunlight on a sphere. The lit fraction runs from nothing at New Moon to everything at Full. One angle sets it: how far the Moon stands from the Sun along its orbit. That angle is the whole story.
Waxing, Then Waning
New: beside the Sun. Full: opposite. Half-lit is a quarter.
At New Moon the Moon sits beside the Sun with its lit side turned away. Each day it moves about twelve degrees east, the sunlit half turns toward us, and the fraction grows: waxing. After Full it shrinks: waning. A half-lit Moon is a quarter of the cycle, not half of it.

The Observatory's Lunar Aperture sorts tonight's fraction into three bands: narrow is below thirty-five percent; half-light is thirty-five through sixty-four; broad is sixty-five or more. The number is computed for noon universal time from the Sun–Moon angle and printed to the whole percent. Read the number, choose the band, and the instrument tells you why you were right, or where the boundary was.
